Paper I - SPECIAL ENGLISH

Time : 3 hours Maximum : 100 marks

1. (a) ans any 2 of the following, every in 200 words : (20)
(i) elaborate the characteristic features of Old English ?
(ii) discuss the influence of French and Latin of English.
(iii) Write about the impact of printing press and bible on English language.
(iv) define briefly how new words are formed enriching the English vocabulary.

(b) If art lies in concealing art, the modern gentleman is an artist indeed ! He knows only too well that the gentleman of the idealistic mould makes a laughing stock of himself. He is not fool enough to be too full of the milk of human kindness. The appearance is all for him. "The devil can sometimes do a very gentlemanly thing" they say. Our gentleman does many a devilish thing with greater ease and grace, and humbles the devil to the dust.

(i) How is the modern gentleman an artist ?
(ii) Why does he shun to be of the idealistic mould ?
(iii) How does he avoid to become a fool ?
(iv) How does he take an upper hand over the devil ?
(v) How do you define the characteristics of the modern gentleman very briefly as mentioned in the above snippet ?

(c) Will no 1 tell me what she sings ? -
Perhaps the plaintive numbers flow
For old, unhappy, far-off things,
And battles long ago;
Whate'ver the theme, the maiden sang
As if her song could have no ending ;
I saw her singing at her work,
And O'er the sickle bending ; -
I listened, motionless and still ;
And, as I mounted up the hill,
The music in my heart I bore
Long after it was heard no more.

(i) What may be the theme of her song ?
(ii) How did the maiden sing her songs ?
(iii) What was she occupied with when she was singing ?
(iv) Which words in the poem suggest to us that the poet was absorbed in her song ?
(v) What was the effect of her song on the poet ?

(i) Attempt an appreciation of Wordsworth's 'Scorn not the Sonnet'.
(ii) How is the West-Wind defined by Shelley ?
(iii) Bring out the lyrical beauty of the lyric 'The Red, Red - Rose' ?

(i) How do you consider 'My Last Duchess' as a typical Dramatic - Monologue of Robert Browning ?
(ii) Analyse Gray's 'Elegy' as a typical example of his style.
(iii) elaborate the salient features of a ballad with special reference to Yeats' poem, 'A Ballad of dad Gilligan' ?

(a) define 'Marriage Proposal' as 'a clash of tempers'
(b) Comment on the plot of 'The Best Laid Plans'

(b) discuss the setting and atmosphere of 'The Tell - Tale Heart'.

(d) define the 'Point of View' used in 'fiction'.
