Time: 3 Hours    Maximum Marks 70

Attempt seven questions in all.

SECTION A

1.    Answer any one of the following:    10 Marks

(a)    List the different forms of prose. Describe any one of the forms.

(b)    What is the meaning of the term exposition? Describe the techniques of exposition.

(c)    Describe the similarities and differences between the short story and the novel. Give examples of each.

SECTION B

Answer three questions from this section. All questions carry 10 marks each.

2.    Answer the following:

(i)    What does Anne Frank call her diary?

(ii)    What language did she write in?

(iii)    What are her reasons for writing a diary?

(iv)    What do you think are the best qualities of the diary?

3 In Premchands story The Servant of the People

(i)    Who is the servant?

(ii)    Describe his character.

(iii)    Comment on the irony of the title

(iv)    What is meant by the last sentence the servant of the people looked at her with eyes of doom and turned away.

4.    Answer the following;

(i)    Briefly recount Forsters anecdote about his Indian friend.

(ii)    What conclusions does he reach about the differences between the English and the Oriental attitude towards emotions.

(iii)    How would you describe Forsters style in this essay?

5.    Answer the following:

(i)    Where was Jawaharlal Nehru when he wrote the letter included in your course?

(ii)    Who was he writing to?

(iii)    He asks in the letter Why then should I continue to write them (the letters)? Why does he ask himself this and what answers does he give?

SECTION C

Attempt any three questions from this section. All questions carry 10 marks.

7.    How is biography different from history on the one hand and fiction on the other

8.    Would you say that Shashi Deshpandes novel The Binding Vine has a feminist theme?

9.    Discuss the point of view from which the story The Short Happy Life of Francis Macomber has been narrated.

10.    Relate the sub-title To whom Shall I Tell My Grief to the main title of the story Misery.
