Answer one question from each unit making five questions in total. 
All questions carry equal marks. 

Unit - I 
1) Attempt a critical appreciation of the following poem: 
The word of a king can slay or spare, 
The word of a clown can gladden. 
The word of a friend can comfort and share, 
The word of a foe can sadden. 
The word of God creates a world 
Of firmament, land and sea; 
The word of my mouth 
Shapes my life, 
And so creates me. 
Unit - II 
2) Examine Aristotle’s views on Tragedy. 
3) Discuss Dr. Johnson as a Neo-classical critic with a special reference to his Life of Milton. 
4) Consider Coleridge’s views in Biographia Literaria as expressive criticism. Unit - III

6) Examine T.S. Eliot’s views on the relationship between poetry and personality in tradition 
and Individual Talent. 
7) Discuss the validity of the views of T.S. Eliot on the metaphysical poets. 
8) Critically comment on the four kinds of meaning and their implications as discussed by 
I.A. Richards.

9) Explain what role does irony play in bringing compactness of structure to a poem? 
10) Write a critical note on the important aspects of Intentional Fallary. 
11) Discuss Emprions central argument in ‘Seventh type of Ambiginty’? 
Unit - V 
12) Sum-up Widdowson’s views on “Stylistics”. 
13) Analyze the theoretical base of structuralism. 
14) Comment on Fish’s definition of text and examine the relevance of his essay Is there a text 
in the class in the present context. 
15) How does Showalter justify the feminist approach to literature? 
16) What is the role of structure, sign and play in the discourses of the Human sciences 
according to Darrida.
