Paper - III : MODERN LITERATURE - I (1550-1700) 

Time : 03 Hours                                                                    Maximum Marks : 80

Questions No. 1 is compulsory 

Answer two questions from unit II and Two questions from unit - III. 

All questions carry equal marks.

 Unit - I 

1) Answer any four of the following. 

a) The reward of sin is death? That’s hard. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive  ourselves, and there’s no truth in us. 

b) Hell hath no limits, nor is circumscribed in one self place; for where we are in hell,  And where hell is, there must we even be. 

c) Death hath this also; that it openeth the gate to good fame, and extinguisheth envy 

d) As for the fruit towards those that are within; it is peace; which containeth infinite  blessings. 

e) Wives are young men’s mistresses; companions for middle age; and old men’s  nurses. 

f) If our two loves be one, or, thou and I Love so alike, that none do slacken, none can  die. 

g) Soldiers find wars and lawyers find out still litigious men, which quarrels more, though she and i do loves. 

h) But all such rules love’s magic can undo; Here you see me, and I am you. 

Unit - II 

2) Is Dr Faustus a Christian tragedy? Why or why not? 

3) Bacon’s essays reflect his deep understanding of human nature and ripe experiences of life. 

Discuss. 

4) Evaluate John Donne as a metaphysical poet. 5) Examine one of Satan’s soliloquies and identify the character traits and poetic

techniques that make him appealing. 

6) Comment on the epic qualities in Milton’s Paradise Lost Book I 

Unit - III 

7) Consider Harlowe’s Edward II as a renaissance or early modern period play. 

8) Discuss the supernatural element in the play The Spanish Tragedy. 

9) Write an essay on Webster’s The white Devil as a tragedy; 

10) How do you consider Drydens Absolom and Achitophel as a political satire. 

11) Consider congreve’s The way of the world as a restoration drama. 

12) Write short notes on four of the following. 

a) Imagery 

b) Satire and irony 

c) Poets as the first philosophers according to Sidney 

d) Character of satan 

e) Restoration drama 

f) History play 

g) Gaueston character 

h) Significance of prologue in Every man in His Humor
