                                                          SECTION - A                        [40 Marks]

1.       Answer the following Short Notes upto 5 lines in length.                         [5x3=15]

          (a)     List the thyroid hormones.  Which amino acid are they derived from ?

          (b)     Define carbohydrates.  What are their functions ?

          (c)     What are essential fatty acids ?  Name them.

          (d)     Draw the structure of the mitochondria and label it.

          (e)     Define pH.  Name the body buffers.

2.      Answer the following question upto 3 pages in length.                                    [10]  

What are enzymes ?  Describe the various factors which affect enzyme action.  Add a note on their clinical importance.

3.      Attempt any ONE question out of the following two questions and Answer should be  upto 5 pages in length.                                                     [15]                                                

(a)     Give a detailed account of fatty acids synthesis.  How do insulin and glucagon regulate this process ?

                                       OR

(b)     What is balanced diet ? Develop a diet for chronically ill patients.

1.       Answer the following Short Notes upto 5 lines in length.                         [5x3=15]

          (a)     What is night blindness ?  Deficiency of which vitamin causes this disorder ?

          (b)     What is the difference between a nucleoside and a nucleotide ?

          (c)     List the various lipoproteins found in the blood.

          (d)     Give an example of epimerism in monosaccharides.

          (e)     Explain the function of the mitochondria.

2.      Answer the following question upto 3 pages in length.                                    [10]  

         

What is gluconeogenesis ?  Show how glucose can be synthesized from alanine.

                                               

3.      Attempt any ONE question out of the following two questions and Answer           should be  upto 5 pages in length.                                                     [15]

(a)     Explain the regulation of blood glucose in the body with special emphasis on the role of the hormones insulin and glucagon.

                                                          OR

(b)     Draw the structure of cholesterol and list its functions.  How is cholesterol metabolized in the body ?  Add a note on atherosclerosis.
