(i) How does sociological approach interpret literature ?

(ii) Discuss briefly the psychological approach to literature.

(iii) Explain how the biography of a writer helps understand his/her literary work.

(i) Comment on the influence of Aristotle’s views on Sidney’s defence of poetry.

(iv) How do you account for a disciplined neo-classicist like Johnson defending the violation of norms by Shakespeare ?

(i) Why does Wordsworth insist on rustic language and incidents from common life in the writing of poetry ?

(ii) How do you explain Wordsworth’s definition of poetry ?

5. Read the following poem and answer the questions that follow (any eight) : [16]

I think that I shall never see

A poem lovely as a tree.

A tree whose hungry mouth is pressed

Against the earth’s sweet flowing breasts;

A tree that looks at God all day

And lifts her leafy arms to pray;

A tree that may in summer wear

A nest of robins in her hair;

Upon whose bosom snow has lain;

Who intimately lives with rain.

Poems are made by fools like me

But only God can make a tree.
