Essay (5x16=80)

1 Describe the anatomy of the temporal bone. What do you mean by the sentence ''The inner ear is located in the petrous portion of the temporal bone'. Describe the changes in the resonance properties of the external ear that occur with age. Add a note on the changing shape of the external ear canal from babies to children to adults (6+6+4)

 

2 Compare and contrast the acoustic and non-acoustic ref lex pathways. Describe the important role played by the middle ear. (8+8)

 

3 Describe the origin, absorption , and composition of the inner ear fluids - perilymph and endolymph. Add a note on "blood supply" to the cochlea. (12+4)

 

4 What is the importance of SOC in sound localization and hearing. What is tonotopicity in auditory cortex and mention  its relevance in human auditory perception. (8+8)

 

5 Explain the physiology of the human vestibular system. Add a note on the functions of efferent auditory pathways. (10+6)
