(i) Strength of the space frames is derived from the rigidity of their triangular frames.

(ii) Three types of grid configuration are square, triangular and multiple.

(iii) Composite materials are also known as hybrid materials.

(iv) Aluminium truss members are lighter in weight hence easy to transport and erect in comparison to steel truss members.

(V) Metal truss members are usually hollow tubular steel sections, of IC, H etc. of high grade steel.

(b) Draw the correct forms of the following :                                                                       5

(i) Tepee

(ii) black tent

(iii) kibitka

(iv) portal frames

(V) king post truss

2    (a) Fill-up :                                                                                                                       10

(i) Arched camber has slightly more curve than                              has.

(ii) Space frame usually utilize a                          to accomplish long spans with few supports.

(iii) Large span structures having span of more than 100 meters are known as                     .

(iv) Trusses/large span structures have material as well as                        component.

(v)                            forms are also known as shells of revolution.

(vi) Folded plates and domes are the example of                         system of structures.

(vii) In a typical double layer grid system of roofing, heavy loading implies the depth of the frame to be                           of span.

(viii) The pre-stressed concrete beam experiences continuous state of                         (compression or tension)

(ix) The vertical divisions of a dome can give shapes called as whereas horizontal divisions result into shapes referred to as                          .

(b) Descriptive answers :                                                                                         2 x 6 = 12

Attempt any two from three :

(i) Discuss the work of any one architect who has applied the conservation concepts to tall structures in the context of trusses/large span structures.

(ii) Discuss the Various grid layers in square and triangular forms with appropriate sketches in detail.

(iii) What do you understand by the term “construction components”. Explain the different types of nodes in detail along with sketches.

3  (a) Short answers :                                                                                              4 x 7=28

Attempt any four from five :

(i) Explain the step wise construction process of large span structures in detail along with sketches.

(ii) Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of large span structures in detail.

(iii) Synclastic shell forms helps in imparting flexibility in form as well as structural exploration in the context of large span structures. Explain with help

of sketches and examples.

(iv) Explain how “Generatix” is a type of hyperboloid with help of sketches and examples.

(v) Discuss the construction and structural details of Hearst tower in the context of cost efiiciency and material exploration.

(b) Compare the conventional RCC system with  pre-stressed concrete system.                   10

                                            OR

(b) Explain the difierent steps of pre-stressing using pre-tensioning technology used in ‘in-line casting’ as in pre-cast columns.                                                                              10

4.  Based on your case studies suggest a suitable design and layout for exhibition pavillion measuring 12 X 36 meters (with suitable exhibition modules and entry gate) for the purpose of exhibition of books. Sketch the plan, section through a typical module and any one joinery detail

maintaining proper proportions.                                                                                            15
