B.A. DEGREE EXAMINATION, MAY 2012.
(Examination at the end of Final Year)
Statistics
Paper III — APPLIED STATISTICS
Time : Three hours Maximum : 100 marks
SECTION A – (4 × 20 = 80 marks)
Answer any FOUR questions.
1. (a) What is a simple random sample? Mention the various methods of draming a random
sample. Derive the unbiased estimates of the population mean and its variance based
on without replacement.
(b) Explain systematic sampling. Show that st sys n R
(var / y ) ≤ var(y ) ≤ var(y ) under the
conditions to be specified by you.
2. Work out the analysis of variance for a one-way classification with one observation per cell.
Where do you use it? State the mathematical model and hypothesis to be used in a two-way
ANOVA.
3. (a) Explain the various basic principles underlying design of experiments.
(b) What is meant by a Randamized block design? Work out the analysis of variance for
randamised block design? Obtain its efficiency compared to CRD.
4. Explain the basic principles underlying the control charts. Distinguish clearly between chart
for variables and chart for attributes. Determine the control charts for np and c charts.
Under what situations are they used?
5. (a) What are the uses of vital statistics? Explain the registration and census methods.
(b) Define and compare various methods of fertility.6. (a) Describe the functions and organisation of N.S.S.O.
(b) Define "reproduction rates" and explain how for they may be looked upon as indices of
population growth. What is an abridged life table?
7. (a) Describe the nature and components of time series. Show that the moving average
method of determining the trend of a time series is related to the method of fitting
curves by the principle of least squares.
(b) What are seasonal fluctuations? Explain ratio to trend and link relative methods.
8. (a) What are index numbers? Show their usefulness in forecasting economic events.
Discuss the mathematical tests for an ideal number. Illustrate these with respect to
Fisher's Ideal index Number.
(b) Explain
(i) base shifting and
(ii) splicing of index numbers and illustrate.
SECTION B – (10 × 2 = 20 marks)
Answer ALL questions.
9. (a) Census.
(b) Optimal allocation.
(c) Advantages of RBD.
(d) Define Latin Square Design.
(e) Control limits for X and R charts.
(f) Rates and Ratios.
(g) Standardised death rates
(h) Relation between mx and qx.
