1. (a) Answer any TWO of the following, each in
200 words. (20)
(i) Write a note on the development of
standard English.
(ii) How did the printing press affect the
evolution of English language?
(iii) Trace the Latin influence on English.
(iv) Attempt a paragraph each on any TWO
of the following :
(1) Word formation
(2) Prudery
(3) Popular misunderstanding
(4) Elevation.
Read the following passages (b) and (c)
carefully and answer the questions that
follow your answers should be complete.
They will be evaluated by the correctness of
your language and relevant matter.

(b) He had just arrived in madras for a
convention when it happened. As he waited
for a taxi at the airport, he had a coughing
spasm, and horrified witnesses saw him
collapse face down. He was dead on arrival at
the hospital. Within an hour, the thirty-yearold executive with a bright future had
become a body with a tag on its toes in the
outopsy room. And 2500 kilometers away a
telephone range, bringing the shattering
news to a wife and two young children.
