PART – A (10 x 1 = 10 MARKS)

 

1.         State any two methods of increasing the efficiency of Rankine cycle.

2.         Name the working fluid used in binary vapour cycle.

3.         How is dust collectors classified?

4.         Write any two requirements of coal handling systems.

5.         What do you understand by nuclear fission?

6.         List the materials used for gas turbine blades.

7.         Write the formula to find brake thermal efficiency and brake power in diesel engine.

8.         Define water hammer.

9.         What is meant by the term tariff in power plant economics?

10.       Write any two functions of solar collector.

 

PART – B (5 x 3 = 15 MARKS)

 

11.       Sketch and label the line diagram for a binary vapour cycle.

12.       What are the advantages of modern high pressure boilers?

13.       Enumerate the advantages of nuclear power plants.

14.       State the factors to be considered in selecting a hydraulic turbine.

15.       Differentiate load curve and load duration curve.

 

PART – C (5 x 15 = 75 MARKS)

 

16.  In a Rankine cycle, the steam at inlet to turbine is saturated at a pressure of 30 bar and the exhaust pressure is 0.2 bar. Determine:

       a.  Pump work                  b.         The turbine work       c.            Cycle efficiency           

       d.  Dryness at the end of expansion                        e.         Condenser heat flow

17.  A steam power plant operates on a theoretical reheat cycle. Steam in the boiler at 150 bar, 550 expands through the high pressure turbine. It is reheated at a constant pressure of 40 bar and 550 and expands through the high-pressure turbine to a condenser at 0.1 bar. Find   

       a.  Quality of steam at turbine exhaust        b.         Cycle efficiency            c.        Steam rate in kg/kwh

 

18.  a.  Discuss the water and steam flow circuit in a steam power plant.                                    (10)

       b.  Sketch and explain the pneumatic ash handling system.                                                  (5)

19.  a.  With a neat diagram, explain the travelling grate stoker firing of coal.                              (8)

       b.  Briefly write about the super critical boilers.                                                                               (7)

 

20.  a.  Explain the working of fast breeder reactor with a neat diagram.                                                (10)

       b.  Discuss the salient features of nuclear waste disposal.                                                                (5)

24.  The yearly duration of curve of a certain plant can be considered as a straight line from 300 MW to 80 MW. Power is supplied with one generating unit of 200 MW capacity and two units of 100 MW capacity each.
