This wind brings all dead things,
Branches that lash the air like whips
And dead leaves rolling in a hurry
Or peering in a rabbit’s bury
Or trying to push down a tree;
Gates that fly open to the wind
And close again behind,
And fields that are a flowing sea
And make the cattle look like ships;
Straws glistening and stift
Lying on air as on a shelf
And pond that leaps to leave itself;
And feathers too that rise and float
Each feather changed in to a bird,
And line-hung sheets that crack and strain;
Even the sun-greened coat,
That through so many winds has served,
The scare crow struggles to put on again.
49. To what objects does the wind give life ?
50. What objects resist the power of the wind ?
51. What is the evidence to show whether it is a windy day in the country side or in a city ?
52. Why are leaves described as dead ?
53. How is the dead given life? What word indicates this in the poem ?
54. Why do the gates close again ?
55. Why are cattle compared to ships ?
56. What is the difference between ‘wind’ and ‘air’ as suggested in the poem ?
