ADVANCED DOWNSTREAM PROCESSING
(Biotechnology)
Time: three Hours Max Marks: 60

ans Any 5 ques. All ques. Carry EQUAL marks

1. (a) What is the role of process engineer in Bio-separation Process? discuss in detail with
suitable examples.
(b)Write in detail about the selecting of different unit operations in relation to their separation factor and the molecular size of the material to be recovered in DSP.

2. (a) Write short notes on classification of cell disruption methods and discuss them?
(b) Write briefly about settling flux, transport flux and total flux pertaining to Continuous
Thickener.

3. (a) Write in detail about principles of Centrifugal filtration? Draw a neat figure that indicates cake and liquid radii from the axis of a Centrifugal filter.
(b) discuss rotary drum vacuum filtration equipment with neat sketch.

4. (a) Write short on the fields of applications of liquid-liquid extraction.
(b) solute is recovered from an aqueous solution containing 20% of the solute by weight using
kerosene as the solvent. The distribution of the solute in water and kerosene may be defined
by x'=6045y' where x' is the kg of solute per kg of water and y kerosene. compute the final concentration in the final raffinate if the extractions done in three simple equilibrium contacts using 5kg solvent per kg of initial solution in every stage.

5. (a) discuss briefly the classification of membrane separation processes.
(b)What do you understand by liquid membranes and discuss how they differ from
dynamically formed membranes. Name the widely used liquid membrane for desalination.

6. (a) Do the crystals of a substance of size one mm have the identical solubility in a solvent like the 1
m particles? Can you provide a qualitative explanation of any difference?
(b) define the construction and working of vacuum crystallizer with neat sketch.

7. (a) A batch of solids is dried from 25 to 6% moisture under conditions identical to those for
which the subsequent applies. The initial weight of the wet solid is 160 kg and the drying
two surface is one m /40 kg dry weight. Determine the time for constant rate period. Critical moisture -3 two content is provided as 20% and critical rate is 0.3 x 10 kg/m s. All the weights are on dry basis.
(b) Differentiate ranging from wet bulb temperature and adiabatic saturation temperature.

8. (a) discuss briefly the classification of precipitation processes.
(b)Explain briefly the supercritical extraction and mention its applications.
