ET-507 (A) : POLLUTANTS AND WATER SUPPLY

Time: three hours
Maximum Marks: 70

Note : Solve any 5 ques.. All ques. carry equal marks. provide neat sketches in support of your ans. Use of calculator is permitted.
1. What is ozone layer depletion ? explain in detail its reason and effects on Global Environment. (14)

2. (i) Write an essay on management of solid waste under Indian conditions. (10)

(ii) Differentiate ranging from Indore and Bangalore processes of composting. (4)

3. (i) describe "per capita demand of water" and also explain the factors which influence it. (7)

(ii) For determination of chloride concentration in a water sample, 50 ml sample was taken and to it 0.5 ml of potassium chromate was added giving light yellow colour. The solution was titrated with N/35.5 silver nitrate and the quantity of consumed silver nitrate was 20 ml. compute the concentration of chloride ions in water sample.
(Take equivalent weight Cl- as 35.5 g) (7)

4. Using neat sketches, explain the following: (2x7=14)

(i) Submerged intakes
(ii) Infiltration gallery

5. (i) explain the factors that influence the disinfection efficiency of chlorine. (8)

(ii) The chlorine consumption in treatment of 8,000 m3/day of water is eight kg/day. The residual chlorine after 30 minutes of contact is 0.3 mg/l. compute the chlorine dose in milligram and chlorine demand of provided water sample. (6)

6. Using sketches, explain the different kinds ol lay-outs of pipe systems used in water distribution and compare their relative merits and demerits. (14)

7. Write short notes on any 4 of the subsequent : (4x3.5=14)

(i) Pyrolysis
(ii) Grab and composite method of sampling
(iii) Pre-treatment of water
(iv) Break point chlorination
(v) Selection of source of water
(vi) Water meter
(vii) Water Act - 1986
