Note : Answer all the five questions.

1. (a) Write short notes on any two of the

following :    10

(i)    Rhythm in English

(ii)    The paradigm of personal pronouns

(iii)    Regular and irregular verbs

(iv)    Front vowels in English

(b) Mark the stress in the following words :    10

(i)    (1) aloud

(2) befriend

(ii)    (1) attend

2. (a) Give phonetic symbols for the following description of the English consonants. The first one is done for you.    5

(i)    voiced dental fricative /3/

(ii)    voiced velar plosive

(iii)    voiceless palato-alveolar affricate

(iv)    voiced alveolar nasal

(v)    voiceless alveolar plosive

(vi)    voiceless labio-dental fricative

(b) Write short notes on any two of the

(i)    Central vowels in English

(ii)    Suffixes and prefixes

(iii)    Nasal sounds in English

(iv)    Word stress and sentence stress

(c) Divide the following words into their constituent morphemes :    5

(i)    gardener

(ii)    organisation

(iii)    piteous

(iv)    preparation

(v)    sanity

3. (a) Give brief definitions of the following kinds of adverbs :

adverbs of place, time, manner

Give at least five examples for each type. 10

OR

Give brief definitions of independent and dependent clauses. Also, describe how many kinds of dependent clauses there are. Give at least two examples for each type.

(b) Make wh-questions corresponding to the bold italicized words in the following sentences.

(i)    The girl forgot the address.

What did the girl forget ?

(ii)    The boys have won the match.

(iii)    The girl sitting in the comer is very pretty.

(iv)    His friend has invited all the employees to the party.

(v)    We are planning a trip to Goa during the autumn break.

(vi)    His brother is going to Pune next week.

(c) The following sentences contain indirect objects. Rewrite these sentences using prepositions.    5

(i)    He sent her some flowers.

(ii)    We must buy her a decent gift.

(iii)    She made him a good cup of coffee.

(iv)    She lent me a large sum.

(v)    He gave the child a beautiful toy.

4. (a) What do you understand by derivational and inflectional affixes ? In what respects are they different and similar ? Give examples.    10

(b) Write sentences to exemplify the following (basic) sentence patterns. One is done for you. 5

(c) Fill in the blanks with the correct form of the

5. (a) Explain with examples the difference between restrictive (defining) and non-restrictive (non-defining) relative clauses.    10

(b) Rewrite the sentences as directed :    5

(i)    We are going to Hyderabad tomorrow. (Change into a yes - no question)

(ii)    He is too weak to walk. (Use so...that)

(iii)    She looked stern. She was kind to everyone. (Rewrite using though)

(iv)    They built the house in a very short time. (Change into passive voice)

(v)    Let the work be completed. (Change into active voice)

(c) Correct the following sentences :    5

(i)    Yesterday I met the man whom had helped their family in times of great difficulty.

(ii)    , We are working now, please dont disturb.

(iii)    There are nothing wrong with him.

(iv)    If he will work hard, he will do well.

(v)    He has been working since four hours.
