ELECTIVE COURSE : ENGLISH EEG-6 : UNDERSTANDING POETRY

Time : 3 hours    Maximum Marks : 100

Note : Section A is compulsory. Answer any three questions in Section B.

SECTION A

1. Explain any four of the following passages with reference to the context, supplying brief critical comments where necessary :    4x7=28

(a) Sheis all States, and all Princes, I,

Nothing else is.

Princes doe but play us; compard to this,

All honours mimique; All wealth alchemie.

(b)    These are thy toys, and, as the snowy flake,

They melt into the yeast of waves, which mar

Alike the Armadas pride, or spoils of

Trafalgar.

(c)    1 was ever a fighter, so one fight more,

The best and the last!

I would hate that death bandaged my eyes, and

forbore,

And bade me creep past.

(d)    We returned to our places, these Kingdoms,

But no longer at ease here, in the old

dispensation,

With an alien people clutching their gods,

I should be glad of another death.

(e)    Two roads converged in a wood and I

I took the one less travelled by,

And that has made all the difference.

(f)    And cradled fair sons on the faithful breast, Who serves her household in fruitful pride,

And worships the gods at her husbands side.

2.    Scan one of the following passages and comment on

its prosodic features :    6

(a)    Perishing gloomily,

Spurrd by contumely,

Cold inhumanity,

Burning insanity,

Into her rest.

(b)    Now fades the glimmering landscape on the

sight,

And all the air a solemn stillness holds,

Save where the beetle wheels his droning

flight,

And drowsy tinklings lull the distant folds:

3.    Write brief notes, illustrating your points with the help of suitable examples, on any two of the following :

Metaphor, Elegy, Oxymoron, the Petrarchan sonnet, Enjambment

SECTION B

Answer any three questions.

4.    Comment on Grays use of poetic devices in Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard.

5.    Discuss Coleridges use of the supernatural in The Rime of the Ancient Mariner.

6.    Assess Matthew Arnold as a poet with reference to his poems in your course.

7.    Attempt a critical appreciation of the Journey of the Magi.

8.    In what way does Indian philosophy influence Hamatreya ?

9.    Compare and contrast the use of imagery by Jayant Mahapatra and A.K. Ramanujan in their poems.
