Engineering Mechanics - II
Time : 180 minutes Marks : 100
Instructions for the students :
1. All ques. are compulsory.
2. “Long ans kind ques. (LAQ)” is a supply kind ques. of 20 marks,
which require typical ans of about 60-80 lines in about 32-40 minutes.
3. “Short ans kind ques. (SAQ)” is a supply kind ques. of five marks,
which require typical ans of about 15-20 lines in about 08-10 minutes.
4. Use of non-programmable kind of scientific calculator is allowed.
5. Draw neat diagrams wherever necessary.
6. presume suitable data if necessary.

Long ans kind ques. (LAQ’s)
1. (a) obtain the lowest initial velocity which a projectile may have, so
that it may clear a wall 3.6 m high and 4.8 m distance from
the point of projection and strikes the horizontal plane
through the foots of the wall at a distance 3.6 m beyond the
wall. The point of projection is at the identical level as the foot of
the wall.
(b) A wheel increases its speed from 45 rpm to 90 rpm in 30
seconds.
obtain :
i) Angular acceleration of the wheel
ii) No. of revolutions made by the wheel in 30 seconds.

2. (a) A body of mass 200 kg is initially stationary on a 150 inclined
plane. What distance along the incline plane must the body
slide before it reaches a speed of 10 m/s ? Take coefficient of
friction ranging from the body and the plane as 0.1.
(b) A body moving with simple harmonic motion has a amplitude
of one meter and the period of complete oscillation is two seconds.
What will be the velocity and acceleration of the body after
0.4 2nd from the extreme position ?

3. (a) A block of mass five kg can slide without friction in a slot and
attached to three springs as shown in figure 1. The springs are
initially outstretched.
When the block is pushed to the left 45 mm and released.
Determine
i) Max velocity of block
ii) Velocity of block when it is at 18 mm from initial
position.
iii) presume K 1kN / m,K 2kN /m,K 4kN /m one two 3

(b) As the bracket ABC as shown in figure two is slowly rotated, the 6
kg block begins to slide towards the spring when 0 ? = 20 . The
maximum deflection of spring is observed to be 50 mm. obtain
coefficients of static and kinetic friction.
Take spring constant K = 1500 N/m

4. (a) A ball overtakes a different ball of twice its own mass and moving
with 1.7 of its own velocity. If the coefficient of restitution
ranging from the 2 balls is 0.75, show that the 1st ball will
come to rest after impact.
(b) A sphere of mass one kg moving at three m/s overtakes a different
sphere of mass five kg moving t\in the identical line at 60 cm/s.
obtain the loss of kinetic energy during impact and show that
the direction of motion of the 1st sphere is reversed. Take
coefficient of restitution as 0.75.
