Automobile Engineering - I
Time : 180 minutes Marks : 100
Instructions for the students :
1. All ques. are compulsory.
2. “Long ans kind ques. (LAQ)” is a supply kind ques. of 20 marks,
which require typical ans of about 60-80 lines in about 32-40 minutes.
3. “Short ans kind ques. (SAQ)” is a supply kind ques. of five marks,
which require typical ans of about 15-20 lines in about 08-10 minutes.
4. Use of non-programmable kind of scientific calculator is allowed.
5. Draw neat diagrams wherever necessary.
6. presume suitable data if necessary.

Long ans kind ques. (LAQ’s)
1. (a) define the phenomenon of detonation or knocking in SI
engines. elaborate the effects of detonation ?
(b) How CI engine combustion chambers are classified ? State
the advantages and disadvantages of induction swirl and
compression swirl.

2. (a) In a test of a four cylinder, four stroke engine 75 mm bore and
100 mm stroke, the subsequent outcomes were found at full
throttle at a particular constant speed and with fixed setting
of fuel supply of 6.0 kg/ hr.
B.P. with all cylinder working = 15.6 kW
B.P. with cylinder no. one cutout = 11.1 kW
B.P. with cylinder no. two cutout = 11.03 kW
B.P. with cylinder no. three cutout = 10.88 kW
B.P. with cylinder no. four cutout = 10.66 kW
If the calorific value of the fuel is 83600 kJ/kg, compute
i) Mechanical efficiency
ii) Indicated thermal efficiency
(b) A 4-cyliner 2 stroke cycle petrol engine developes 30 kW
at 2500 rpm. The mean effective pressure on every piston is 8
bar and mechanical efficiency is 80%. compute the
diameter and stroke of every cylinder of stroke to bore ratio
1.5. Also compute the fuel consumption of the engine, if
brake thermal efficiency is 28%; the CV of the fuel is 43900
kJ/kg.

3. (a) discuss in detail the 3 basic cleaning processes of engine
parts.
(b) What is the function of piston rings ?
(c) elaborate the materials used for manufacturing of cylinder
heads. List the drawbacks of Aluminium as a cylinder head
material.

4. (a) Briefly discuss the main components of a typical lubricating
system.
(b) define the purpose, operation and location of the
camshaft.
(c) discuss the purpose and operation of turbocharger.

Short ans kind ques. (SAQ’s)
5. List the variables, affecting the delay period. 5
6. discuss Rope brake Dynamometer. 5
7. Classify Automotive Engines. 5
8. Write a note on ‘Supercharger’.
