1. Answer any FIVE of the following in about 30 words each: (5 * 3 = 15)

(a) Long and curious speeches are as fit for dispatch as a robe or mantle with a long train is for race.

(i) Who is the speaker?

(ii) What is the disadvantage of a long speech?

 

(b) The blessing of Judah and lssachar will never meet. That the same people or nation, should be both the lions whelp and the seas between burdens.

(i) Bring out the Biblical allusion.

(ii) What does Bacon want to convey through the allusion?

 

(c) Celsus could never have spoken it as a physician, had he not been a wise man withal; when he gives it for one of the great precepts of health and lasting. That a man do vary and interchange contraries.

(i) Who is Celsus?

(ii) What are his recommendations to lead a healthy life?

 

(d) It hath been an opinion that the French are wiser than they seem, and the Spaniards seem wiser than they are.

2. Write short notes on any TWO of the following in about 100 words each : (2 * 5 = 10)

(a) Write briefly on Wyatts sonnet -Each man me Telleth.

(b) Comment on Bacons essay -Of Friendship.

(c) Explain Marlowes conception of tragedy.

(d) Analyze the problem of suffering as presented in The Book of Job.

 

3. Write on THREE of the following in about 200 words each : (3 * 10 = 30)

(a) (i) Write a note on the universal appeal of Bacons essays. Or

(ii) Consider The Book of Job as a master piece.

(b) (i) Write a critical appreciation of the poem -Tell me, Thou Skilful Shepherds Swain Or

(ii) Comment on Spencers sonnet _Being

(c) Consider Faustus as a tragic hero

(d) Examine Every man in His Humour as a comedy of Humours.
