13. (a) Explain the significance of stopping, immediate and
overtaking sight distance.

(b) Explain the various types of traffic signals with neat sketches and their functions. How are the signal timings decided?

14. (a) Explain sight distance and factors causing restrictions to
sight distance. (4)

(b) An ascending gradient of 1 in 100 meets a descending gradient of 1 in 120. A summit curve is to be designed for a speed of 80kmph so as to have an overtaking sight distance of 470m. (8)

 

15. (a) Describe the materials which are commonly used as ballast
in a railway track.

(b) What are the requirements of an ideal material for sleeper?

16. (a) What is the purpose of providing fish plates? Give details of
a typical connection by fish plates on the Indian railways.

(b) Define permanent way and discuss briefly the main requirements of an ideal permanent way.

 

17. (a) Discuss the construction of docks, with special reference to
location, internal arrangement and design loads.

(b) Give typical cross sections of the several standard types of
quay walls and explain their construction.

and explain their destructive effects.

(b) What are the requirements of a good port and bring out the difference between a port and a harbour.

 

19. (a) What are the requirements of a suitable site for terminal
building development? What facilities are provided in the
terminal building?

(b) Explain the network of air traffic control.

20. (a) What is the basic difference between airport and highway
pavements? Discuss in brief the various factors to be
considered in the design of airfield pavements. (8)
