SARDAR VALLABHBHAI NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING M-TECH I (TURBO M ACHINES) II SEMESTER

END SEMISTER EXAM-2012

DESIGN OF THERMAL TURBO MACHINES Time: 02 Hrs.    Marks: 50

Q-l Discuss in brief 3-D design theories of axial flow machines as against 2-D design [06] theory.

Q-2 Design an axial flow turbine for the following specifications:    [24]

1.

Mass flow rate

= 18 kg/s

2.

Inlet pressure

= 4.5 bar

3.

Inlet temperature

= 1150 K

4.

Temperature drop

= 150 K

5.

Pressure ratio

= 2

6.

Total-to-total efficiency

= 90% -

Assume suitable data if any.

Q-3 Design a centrifugal compressor which is to deliver air at the rate of 7 Kg /s from [20] the plenum chamber where the conditions (stagnation) are 1.05 bars and 300K, which remains same along the inlet pipe. The acceptable axial velocity component is 232 m/s. Take hub to tip eye diameter ratio 0.5 and driving speed of compressor is 17000 RPM While require pressure ratio after passing through compressor is 3.5. Assume that there is negligible stagnation pressure loss occur in the outlet system and total to total efficiency of compressor is 85 %. Also radial velocity remains constant throughout the Impeller. State proper assumption required. Also draw appropriate velocity triangles at inlet & Outlet condition of rotor & stator.
