PART - A (Marks- 32)
1. Design a laterally unsupported beam for an effective span of 5m to carry a
superimposed load of 25kN/m and a point load of 10kN at mid point. The
ends are restrained against lateral bending and torsion. Check the suggested
part for web buckling. Draw to scale a) the cross part. b) Longitudinal
part of the girder showing the stiffeners.
OR
2. Design a gusseted base under a column carrying an axial load of 1000kN.
The column part consists of ISMB 350 with plates 250mm × 12mm on
every side of the I part. The allowable pressure of the concrete pedestal is
4 N/mm2. Design needed connections also. Draw to scale. a) Plan of the
gusset base with details b) Side views of the gusseted base.
PART - B (Marks- 48)
3. a. List out and discuss different features of I.S. rolled steel parts
b. List out advantages and disadvantages of welded connections over riveted
connections
c. discuss web buckling and its significance
4. Design a laterally supported beam for an effective span of 4.5m to carry a
superimposed load of 35kN/m. Check the suggested part for web
buckling
5. Design a double-laced column for a load carrying capacity of 1500 kN the
effective length of the column is 4m. Use channel parts such that the
flexural rigidity of the part is identical in both the direction.

6. Design a gantry girder for an industrial building to carry an electric overhead
traveling crane with the subsequent data. Check the part for bending
stresses.
Crane capacity = 200kN Weight of crane excluding crab = 100kN
Weight of crab = 50 kN Span of crane ranging from rails = 15 m
Wheel base = 3.0 m Minimum hook approach = 1.2 m
Span of gantry girder = eight m Weight of rail part = 30 kg/m
7. A joint of a roof truss connects members carrying a tension of
200KN.Design a tension member in the form of a pair of angles and
connected by their short legs to the identical side of the gusset plate. Check the
