Time: three hours Max Marks: 80
ans any 5 ques.
All ques. carry equal marks
? ? ? ? ?
1. discuss what kinds of bonding would be expected for every of the subsequent materi-
als: brass (a copper-zinc alloy), rubber, barium sulfide, solid xenon, bronze, nylone
and aluminium phosphide? [16]
2. (a) State the various diffraction methods of determining the structures and provide
their advantages and disadvantages if any.
(b) obtain the Miller indices of a plain that makes an intercept of one on a- axis and
2 on b-axis and is parallel to c-axis. [8+8]
3. The energy stored by strain hardening in a metal is 4* 104 cal/m3. provided that
the shear modulus is 4* 1010 N/m2, b= 2.8* 10-10 m and ? =1/3, compute the
dislocation density. presume that the edge and screw dislocation densities are equal.
[16]
4. (a) describe phase and phase rule.
(b) In a binary phase diagram (pressure omitted), what is the maximum number
of phases that can coexist for at lowest 1 degree of freedom?
(c) provide the number of variables and the degrees of freedom at the peritectic
temperature of a binary phase diagram. [6+5+5]
5. (a) explain about
i. Molybdenum steels
ii. Silicon steels
iii. Nickel-chromium steels .
(b) Write a brief note on stainless steels. [4+4+4+4]
6. (a) define the creep and stress relaxation experiments on a Maxwell element
and sketch the corresponding curves for both the experiments.
(b) define the operation of the Voigt-Kelvin element with a neat figure and
draw the strain-time curve. [8+8]
7. (a) discuss ductile and brittle fracture.
(b) define the methods for protection against fracture. [8+8]
8. (a) define the different means for prevention and control of corrosion.
