PART -A
Q 1.a. discuss the repetition method of measuring horizontal angles with a transit
theodolite. explain the advantages of the method? (8marks)
b. Distinguish ranging from (i)face left and face right observations and (ii) Clamp
screw and Tangent screw? (4marks)
c. discuss with a neat sketch the method of prolonging a straight line in both the
cases i.e. when the instrument is in adjustment and when it is not in adjustment?
(8marks)
Q 2.a. elaborate the fundamental lines of a theodolite what should be the interrelationships
ranging from them? (4marks)
b. Mention the permanent adjustments of Dumpy level and define the test of
Two-peg method to be made for the permanent adjustment of Dumpy level?
(8marks)
c. discuss with a neat sketch for testing a permanent adjustment of theodolite by
‘’Sphire Test”? (8marks)
Q three a. discuss the method of finding the decreased level of the top of the provided object
whose base is inaccessible by double plain method? (8marks)
b. Mention the advantages of total station over the conventional instruments?
(2marks)
c. To determine the elevation of the top of the flagstaff, the subsequent observation
were made:
Instrument station studying on the B.M Angle of elevation Remarks
A 1.266 10 28’ R.L of B.M
=248.362
B 1.222 seven 12’
Stations ‘A’ and ‘B’ and the top of the aerial pole are in the identical vertical plane.

is 50m? (10marks)
Q four a What do understand by Annallatic lens. Where and why it is used? (3marks)
b. discuss with neat sketch how Subtense Bar is used with thedolite to determine
the horizontal distance ranging from 2 points? (7marks)
c. Determine the gradient from a point A to point B from the subsequent
observations made with a tachometer fitted with an anallatic lens. The constant t
of the instrument is 100 and staff is held vertically.
Instrument Staff Bearing Vertical Staff
Station point angle studying
P A 1300 +100 1.360, 1.915, 2.470
P B 2200 + 50 1.065, 1.915, 2.705
(10marks)
PART-B
Q five a. What is degree of curve. Derive its relationship with radius of curve? (4marks)
b. compute the ordinates at 5m distance for a circular curve having a long chord
of 40 m and a versed sine of 2m ? (6marks)
c. 2 tangents intersect at a chainage of 1200m and the deflection angle being
400.Calculate the data necessary needed to set out a simple curve by Rankine’s
method. The degree of curve is 100 and 20 m chain is used? (10marks)
Q six a. Draw a neat tagged sketch of compound curve and giving the elements of a
compound curve. discuss the method of setting out compound curve?
(10marks)
b. 2 parallel railway lines are to be connected by a reverse curve of various
radii. If the lines are 10m apart and the maximum distance ranging from tangent
points measured parallel to the straight is 45m. compute the radius of the
second branch if that of 1st branch is 65m, also compute the length of both the
branches.? (10marks)

conditions to be fulfilled by a transition curve? (7marks)
b. elaborate vertical curves and where are they used? (3marks)
c. A transition curve is needed for a circular curve is 200m radius the gauge
being 1.5m and the maximum super elevation restricted 15cm. The transition is
to be designed for a velocity such that no lateral pressure is imposed on the rails
and the rate of gain of radial acceleration is 30cm/sec. compute the needed
length of transition curve and design speed? (10marks)
Q eight a. define the principle of working of planimeter and use of planimeter in
measuring areas.? (10marks)
b. The areas within the contour lines at the site of reservoir and along the face of
the proposed dam are as follows:
Contour: 150 148.5 147 145.5 144 142.5 141 139.5 138
