Unit I

1.    (a) What is a semiconductor ? Which are the commonly

used semiconductors ? How are n-type and p-type semiconductors obtained ?

(b) Explain in detail the V-I characteristics of a semiconductor diode.

Or

2.    (a) What is a p-n junction ? Explain the formation of

depletion layer in an unbiased p-n junction. How does it vary with external Bias ?

(b) Give the structure of a transistor and the circuit symbol. Compare the physical sizes, doping levels and the functions of the three layer in the transistor.
