2008 Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalaya(Technical University) B.E Chemical Engineering B.E. (second semester) chemical engg. BASIC CIVIL ENGINEERING ques. paper
Basic Civil Engineering December 2008 ques. Paper

1. (a) List and discuss different physical and mechanical properties of
materials used for construction?
(b) explain characteristics of a
building stone. provide values of compressive strength of any three
building stone.
2. discuss the principle of making mortar and concrete
pointing out the influence of size of aggregates and water-cement ratio
on the proportioning and strength of mortars and concrete.

3.
(a)Define orientation of a building. discuss the different aspects of
orientation of building? (b) Name the various kind of foundations you
recommend under various situations and soils. discuss them brief and
provide neat sketch?
4. (a) State the general principles to be observed in
brick masonary construction. Sketch (i) Ashlar (ii) Rubber masonary in
elevation (b) What is dampness? elaborate its ill effects? discuss with
sketches how damp proofing is done in building?

5. (a) The distance
ranging from 2 station was 1200 m when measured with a 20 m chain. The
identical distance when measured with 30 m chain was obtained to be 1195 m. If
the 20 m chain was 0.05 m too long, what was the fault in the 30 m
chain? The sides of a triangle are 156, 103 and 257 m respectively.
Examine whether the triangle is well conditioned. (b) Name the
equipmrnt needed for compass survey. Do not define the equipment
but provide nest free hand sketch. provide number needed for every
equipment.
6. The subsequent staff readings were taken in succession
with a level. The instrument was shifted after the 4th and seventh
readings. Either the data in a page of level book by (1) The plane of
communication method (2) Rise and Fall Method. The 1st readings was
taken on a bench mark of decreased level 68.235 m : 1.735, 1.625, 1.580,
1.250, 1.115, 2.010, 1.325, 1.055, 1.095, 0.955 Show also the
arithmetical check?
7. (a) elaborate the characteristics of contour
lines ? A sketch is necessary while explaining a characteristic
feature? (b) discuss the subsequent : (i) Application of Remote Sensing
(ii) Earthquake resistant buildings
8. Write short notes on any 4 of
the subsequent : (i) IS codes for building design (ii) EDM methods of
measurement of distances (iii) Plane table and its accessories (iv)
Requirement of a good stair (v) Plastering and Pointing (vi) Plastics
(vii) Curing the concrete (viii) Energy efficiency in planning of
building

Civil Engineering December 2008 Question Paper
1. (a) List and explain various physical and mechanical properties of
materials used for construction? (b) Discuss characteristics of a
building stone. Give values of compressive strength of any three
building stone. 2. Explain the principle of making mortar and concrete
pointing out the influence of size of aggregates and water-cement ratio
on the proportioning and strength of mortars and concrete. 3. (a)
Define orientation of a building. explain the various aspects of
orientation of building? (b) Name the different type of foundations you
recommend under different situations and soils. Explain them brief and
give neat sketch? 4. (a) State the general principles to be observed in

elevation (b) What is dampness? What are its ill effects? Explain with
sketches how damp proofing is done in building? 5. (a) The distance
between two station was 1200 m when measured with a 20 m chain. The
same distance when measured with 30 m chain was found to be 1195 m. If
the 20 m chain was 0.05 m too long, what was the error in the 30 m
chain? The sides of a triangle are 156, 103 and 257 m respectively.
Examine whether the triangle is well conditioned. (b) Name the
equipmrnt required for compass survey. Do not describe the equipment
but give nest free hand sketch. Give number required for each
equipment. 6. The following staff readings were taken in succession
with a level. The instrument was shifted after the fourth and seventh
readings. Either the data in a page of level book by (1) The plane of
communication method (2) Rise and Fall Method. The first readings was
taken on a bench mark of reduced level 68.235 m : 1.735, 1.625, 1.580,
