PART A

ans all ques.. every ques. carries four marks.

1.Compare a heat engineand a heat pump. When do you call a heat pump a refrigerator?

2.Define entropy and show that entropy is a property of a system.

3.Sketch carnot cycle on PV and TS diagrams, and name the processes. What is its efficiency?

4.With the help of a block diagram, discuss the fuel system of a diesel engine.

5.What is a fire tube boiler? Name 2 fire tube boilers.

6.Differentiate ranging from Horning and Lapping.

7.Explain, briefly the working of a vapour compression refrigeration system.

8.Briefly define the rolling process.

9.Explain the terms slip and velocity ratio with respect to the belt drive.

10.What is meant by priming of a pump? Why is it necessary in a centrifugal pump?

PART B
ans any 1 ques. from every module. every ques. carries 20 marks.

MODULE 1

11 a)Obtain an expression for ideal thermal efficiency of an otto cycle in terms of compression ratio and specific heat ratios.

b) A carnot engine, working ranging from 650K and 310K produces 150KJ of work. obtain the thermal efficiency and heat added during the process.

12 a) Prove that the efficiency of reversible engine depends on the temperature of source and sink and independ of working substance.

b)An insulated cylinder of capacity 2.8 cu. m contains 15kg of nitrogen. Paddle work is done on the gas till the pressure inside the cylinder increases from five bar to 10 bar. Determine

a) change in internal energy
b) Work done
c) Heat transfer
d) change in entropy
presume Cp = 1.04KJ/Kg K and Cv = 0.7432 KJ/Kg K

MODULE 2

13 a) With suitable sketch, define the Cochran boiler.
b) compute the quantity of three Kg of steam at pressure of 1.3 bar. The dryness fraction of the sample of steam is 0.8. The specific quantity of water at 1.3 bar is 0.00105cu.m/Kg and specific quantity of dry steam is 1.325cu.m/Kg at 1.3 bar.

14. a) define with neat sketches the working of a simple constant pressure open cycle gas turbine.

b) Differentiate ranging from pressure compounding and velocity compounding of steam turbine.

MODULE 3

15. a) define with suitable sketches, the working of a reciprocating pump.
b) define various kinds of gear trains.

16. a) Explain, with sketches, the subsequent operations.

1) Thread cutting 2) Drilling
3) Grinding 4) Reaming
b) Explain, with neat sketch, the die casting process.
