Time : three Hours Max. Marks : 100
Instructions :1) ans all ques. from Part – A and 1 ques. from every of
the Modules under Part – B.
2) ques. from Part – A carry four marks and those under Part – B
carry 20 marks.
PART – A
1. elaborate the prominent defects that may usually arise in the frames ?
2. elaborate the characteristics of a X-shape frame ?
3. discuss the advantages of integral construction over conventional kinds.
4. discuss the condition for actual rolling.
5. elaborate the characteristics of an independent suspension system ?
6. describe critical speed of a propeller shaft. provide its expression.
7. discuss the working principle of a Vacuum Servo Breaking System.
8. Distinguish ranging from wired wheels and disc wheels.
9. Differentiate static and dynamic balancing of tyres.
10. Write a note on tyre rotation. (10×4=40 Marks)

Module – I
11. a) discuss the characteristics of the subsequent chassis layouts :
i) Front engine front wheel drive.
ii) Front engine rear wheel drive.
b) With a neat sketch, discuss the constructional details and working of a
"Re-circulating ball" kind steering gear box. 20
12. a) discuss the different classification of the various kinds of automobiles. discuss
the Four-Wheel drive chassis layout.
b) What do you mean by under steering and over steering ? discuss the characteristics
of a Davis steering mechanism. 20
Module – II
13. a) What do you mean by a differential lock ? With neat cross sectional sketches
discuss various kinds of double reduction axles.
b) What is a constant velocity joint ? discuss in brief the principle of working of
velocity joint. State also the situations which necessitate the use of a velocity
joint with their merits. 20
14. a) What do you mean by a limited slip differential ? discuss the effects of torque
reaction and driving thrust on vehicle drive line.
b) discuss the working of a Telescope kind shock absorber with a neat sketch. 20
Module – III
15. a) What is meant by stopping time and stopping distance ? Show that stopping
distance increases with vehicle speed.
b) Briefly discuss different static and rolling properties of pneumatic tyres. 20
16. a) Compare tubed tyres and tubeless tyres. discuss the different factors affecting
tyre life.
b) elaborate inset, zeroset and outset wheels ? describe a light alloy wheel with their
merits and demerits. 20
