part – B
(Answer any five ques.. every ques. carries six marks.)

B. 1) What is a system call ? define various kinds of system calls.

2) What resources are used when a thread created ? How do they differ from those when a process is created ?

3) What is situation Switch ? elaborate the steps taken by the Operating system when a situation switch occurs ?

part – C

(Answer any one ques.. every ques. carries 15 marks.)

C. 1) By drawing neat diagrams, compare page fault characteristics of the FIFO and LRU page replacement policies for the subsequent sequence of page references,

for a process, considering the change in the number of page faults occurring, when the number of page frames allocated to the process increases from two to three and then from three to 4.

Page reference 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 4, 3, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 5
string
Reference time t1, t2 t3, t4, t5, t6, t7, t8, t9, t10, t11, t12, t13
string

2) Write a note on the Linux system, clearly explaining its overall architecture as well as describing important features of the component modules such as process management, file management, memory management and I/O management.
