(1)    What is a cyclic group ? Given an example.

(2)    Give the point groups of the staggered and eclipsed conformations of ethane.

(3)    State Heisenbergs uncertainty principle.

(4)    State the variation theorem.

(5)    Estimate the delocalization energy of benzene using Huckel Molecular Orbital theory .

A.    Illustrate how knowledge of the symmetry of a molecule can be used to know whether it is chiral or not.

OR

B.    Explain how symmetry' information is useful in predicting whether a moleculc has a nonzero dipole moment.

A.    Generate a representation of the point group C_3V using a suitable basis. If it is reducible, reduce it to the component irreducible representations.

OR

B.    Construct the character table for Cj point group and show how translations along with Cartesian axes transform.

A.    Obtain the symmetry of the normal vibrational modes of water molecule.

OR

B.    Explain how group theory can be used to predict the allowedness of electronic transitions.

A.    State the postulates of Quantum Mechanics.

OR

B.    Obtain the time-independent Schrodinger equation from time-dependent Schrodinger equation.
