PART - A (Answer ALL questions)

(All questions carry EQUAL marks)

(1)    What is a cyclic group ? Given an example.

(2)    Give the point groups of the staggered and eclipsed conformations of ethane.

(3)    State Heisenbergs uncertainty principle.

(4)    State the variation theorem.

(5)    Estimate the delocalization energy of benzene using Huckel Molecular Orbital theory .

PART -B (All questions carry EQUAL marks)

A.    Illustrate how knowledge of the symmetry of a molecule can be used to know whether it is chiral or not.

B.    Explain how symmetry' information is useful in predicting whether a moleculc has a nonzero dipole moment.

A.    Generate a representation of the point group C3V using a suitable basis. If it is reducible, reduce it to the component irreducible representations.

A.    Obtain the symmetry of the normal vibrational modes of water molecule.
