SECTION A (20 marks)

1. Answer the following :

(a) Fill in the blanks in the following sentences using the present continuous tense of the verbs given in brackets:    (2)

2. (a) Draft a telegram based on the following situations. Invent necessary addresses.    (5)

We placed the order for Computer spare parts on 10th of last month. More than a month has passed but so far we have not received the goods. If the goods are not received till May 25, we will have no hesitation to cancel the order.

(b)    Draft an advertisement for the following programme:    (5)

A two bed room apartment for rent in posh locality in Anna Nagar.

(c)    Make notes on the following passage : (5)

A science is the study of real things, for example, soil, plants, animals, machines, automobiles, radios, wind, rain and even people, science studies everything which you can see, hear touch smell. Scientists are people who try to understand the real things.

Everywhere in the world there are people who look carefully at the things around them and try to understand what see. Any person who does this is a scientist, even if he or she never studied science from a book.

The first thing a scientist does is to observe. Many people walk past things without really seeing them, but a good scientist looks things with care.

(d)    Write a persuasive note to be circulated among students to donate liberally towards the earthquake victims.    (5)

3.    Annotate any FOUR of the following : (4x3 = 12)

4.    Read the following and answer the questions given below :    (12)

The light had gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere; he said our beloved leader, Bapu, as we called him, the father of the nation, is no more.

The light has gone out, I said, and yet I was wrong. For the light that shone in this country was nc ordinary light; in a thousand years, he predicted that

light will still be seen ...... the world will see it and it

will give solace to innumerable hearts. For that light represented something more than the immediate

present; it represented the living, the eternal truths, reminding us of the right path, drawing us from error, taking this ancient country to freedom.

The light whose disappearance Nehru mourned belonged to the rest of the world as well as to India. From every corner of a shocked globe, messages of condolence poured into New Delhi.

(a)    The light has gone out of our lives and there is darkness everywhere. Explain.

(b)    Why was Nehru wrong?

(c)    Why was the light not an ordinary one?

5. Answer the following in about 200 words :

(a) (i) Illustrate Sosekis observations about human nature by narrating the story from the perspective of a cat.

(ii) How did the world respond to the shocking event of Gandhiji assassination?

(b) (i) iShow how the choice of the caskets is a real test of character in the play The Merchant of Venice.

Or

(ii) Discuss Twelfth Night as a Romantic

comedy.

(c) (i) Comment on the role of the witches in Macbeth.

Or

(ii) Comment on the wit and humour in Much ado About Nothing.
