India harbours vast diversity of plants and animals and an impressive variety of habitats and ecosystems. This
biological diversity offers the means for meeting the basic requirements of most of India’s population. It is the treasure
house form which future needs will be met and where elements will be obtained that will form the basis of new
knowledge and technology. But environmental issues such as climate change, depleted resources and a greatly

People have realized that the environmental resources they currently utilize need to be used without unnecessary
degradation or threat to the critical habitats, species and the environment . the global community has agreed to the
noble aim of sustainable development and management models that work. Upon analysis, it is at the local level that
both the wealth of diversity and threats to it are most tangible. Against the backdrop, indigenous knowledge is
becoming topic of interest for more and more and more social and natural scientists.
Indigenous knowledge ( IK) refers to the unique, traditional, local knowledge existing within and developed around
the specific conditions of women and men indigenous to a particular geographic area. The development of IK systems,
covering all aspects of life, including management of natural resources has been a matter of survival to the people who
generated these systems.
