instructions to Candidates:

Attempt overall Five questions selecting one question from each unit. All questions earn equal marks. (Schcmatic diagrams must be shown wherever necessary. Any data you feel missing may suitably he assumed and stated clearly. Units of quantities used/calculated must he stated clearly.)

UNIT -1

1.    a) Classify solid wasie based on its source ol' generation. Describe the

composition and characteristics of the waste generated from each of these sources.    (16)

OK

b) What are the different aspects of solid waste management? Describe. (16)

UNIT II

2.    a) What are the basic factors that affect solid waste generation rates? Discuss.

(8)

b) Describe the outcome of poor management of solid wastes.    (8)

OR

a) List the wastes that the prohibited from processing along with the municipal solid wastes. Discuss.    (8)

UNIT-III

Discus the present Indian scenario of street collection of waste, its transport and disposal.    (16)

OK

a) Write short notes on the following and establish the relationship of overs11 lime taken per trip considering all the unit operation* involved for each type of collection system.

i)    Hauled container system

ii)    Stationary Container system    f4j ,2> IContd-

b) A total of 11 apartment complexes and commercial establishments have entered into a contract with a solid waste collection firm io collect their solid wastes as per stationary container system. The discarded volume of solid wastes to be collected is 96m' per collection day. Assuming that there is one container at each location and each of the 11 sources contribute the same amount of solid wastes enough to utilize the full volume of the container per trip, determine the time of emptying each container from cach location, the number of trips required on collection day, the size of the collection vehicle, and the size of the container to be provided for the following conditions:    (S)

Total lime per trip = 3.01 h

Time from garage to first container location = 20 min

Time from last container location to garage = 25 min

One-way haul distance = 30 km

Speed limit = 88 km/h

At site time 0.1 h

Time spent in traveling from one container location to the other = U.lh Collection vehicle compaction ratio 2,5    ,

UNIT - IV

4. a) Flow do municipal solid waste landfills contribute to air pollution ami how can it be controlled?    (8)

hj Describe in brief the various components of an engineered landfill. (8)

OR

a)    Explain the environmental impact faced on solid waste disposal in land with reference io human.    (10)

b)    Ksiimate the required landfill (of rectangular cross section) area for a community with a population or 31,000. Assume that the following conditions apply:

i)    Period of operation of Landfill = 2 yrs

ii)    Solid waste Generation = 3 kg/capita/day

iii)    Compacted specific weight of solid wastes in landfill 475 kg/m

iv)    Average depth of compacted solid wastes = 6m

5K3158    <3)    [Contd...

a) What is composting? Discuss the various phases of composting in their sequential order with respect to the temperature changes and the microbial successions.    (H)

b) Describe the processing techniques used in solid waste management system*, to improve the overall efficiency of the system, in terms of material recovery or in preparing the solid wastes for further processing.    (Hj

OR

A residential institute campus constitutes of a main institute building (with faculty chambers, classrooms, laboratories, and administrative blocks), hostels, faculty quarters, medical centre, a market and a school for the children of the faculty members. Discuss the various types of solid wastes that will be generated from this institute campus per day. Suggest methods of treatment and disposal for this waste.    (W)
