1.    (a) What do you understand by hollow, ACSR and

bundle conductor? Explain in detail the reasons for adoption of bundle conductors in EHV lines. 8

(b) Derive the necessary relationship to show that the bulk power transmission over long distances is economical at EHV.    8

2.    (a) Discuss the flat frequency control method foi

load frequency control in power systems. Why is it necessary to use very sensitive frequency controller in this type of control?    8

(b) What is the need of load frequency control in power system? How is the load frequency "control achieved?    8

3.    (a) Describe various types of thyristorised static VAR

compensation with their merits and demerits. S

(b) Define the methods of voltage control.    8

4.    (a) Discuss the tie line bias control method of load

frequency control in power system.    

(b) Explain corona losses in EHV lines under bad weather conditions and its estimation.    8

5.    (a) Describe the automatic generation control with

block diagram.    8

(b) For reactive power control in power system, describe a thyristor controlled reactor and fixed capacitor scheme with the help of circuit and control characteristics diagram.    . 8


6.    (a) Briefly explain the FACTS controller.    8

(b) Describe the effects of electrostatic fields of EHV lines.    8

7.    (a) Describe the various equipments used in a

convertor station of HVDC system.    8

(b) Describe the HVDC link and convertor control characteristics.    8

8.    Write short notes on any two:

(/) MTDC system
