O.No. I is in nine parts, five of which must be attempted.

1. Attempt any five of the questions given below

a)    Write a short note on the narrator ofKanthapura

b)    Identify and comment critically, on the following lines :

f)    Identify and comment critically, on the following lines:

2.    In Kanthapura. "the new patriotic upsurge fused completely with traditional religious faith, thus rediscov ering the Indian soul.'* Do you agree ? Give reasons for your answer.

3.    In the West people tend to read Midnight's Children as a fantasy, while in India people thought of it as pretty realistic, almost a history book. Comment on the form of Salman Rushdies novel, in the light of his statement quoted above.

5.    How does Subramia Bharati articulate his vision for caste and gender equality in modem India, through h|s poetry ? Discuss with reference to any three of his poems from the prescribed syllabus.

6.    Does Arun Kolatkars poem, Jeiuri, provide us with an account of a successful spiritual quest ? Discuss, with particular emphasis on Kolatkar's poetic technique.
