ENGLISH - Paper Eng. 0402 : LITERARY CRITICISM

Answer Q No. 1 which is compulsory, and any 3 others from 2 to 8.
Q No. 1 carries 25 (5 x 5) marks, and the others carry 15marks each.
Q.No. 1 is in nine parts, five of which must be attempted.

l. Answer in about 250 words each any five of the following questions:
a) Write a brief note on I. A, Richards disagreement with Aristotles belief that the command of metaphor cannot be imparted to another: it is a mark of genius, for to make good metaphors implies an eye for resemblances.
b) The intentional fallacy is a romantic one. Comment.
c) Write a short note on Benjamins comparison between the magician and the surgeon.
d) Cite three differences offered by Bakhtin to distinguish between the form of the epic and that of the novel.
e) Elucidate the distinction between addition and substitution made by Derrida in advancing the idea of the supplement.'
f) I think, that, as our society changes, at the very moment when it is in the process of changing, the author-function will disappear, and in such a manner that fiction and its polysemous texts will once again function according to another mode, but still with a system of constraint - one which will no longer be the author, but which will have to be determined or, perhaps, experienced. Comment.
