The Cabinet reshuffle will take place today. Rashtrapati Bhawan is busy making preparations for the swearing-in of new ministers in the evening. The two-hour meeting between Sonia Gandhi and the Prime Minister on Tuesday morning provided the final touch to the cabinet reshuffle. Issues related to reshuffle were discussed at the meeting. Three to four new young faces are likely to be inducted into the cabinet. Several portfolios fell vacant in the Council of Ministers when A Raja had resigned from the cabinet in the wake of 2G spectrum issue. The position of Minister of State for External Affairs has not been filled since Shashi Tharoor resigned last year over a cricket controversy involving his now-wife, Sunanda Pushkar. Sources said that some of them may be drafted for the party work.

In Australia, the flood waters that have cut a path of death and destruction through the eastern state of Queensland have now moved south into Victoria State. Thousands of people in 51 towns across the state have been affected by the flooding, which some officials have described as a once-in-200 year

event. The small city of Horsham, about 300 kilometers north of the state capital Melbourne, has been cut in half by flood waters caused by swollen Wimmera River. Hundreds of homes have been inundated, while a Pacific weather pattern has caused massive flooding in Queensland, claiming the lives of at least 30 people.

In a novel attempt to curbNaxal movement from spreading its wings in Tamil Nadu, police have 'adopted' 300 villages and are providing them basic amenities to improve their lives, according to a top police official. Speaking at a function after distributing welfare schemes to tribals, DGP Letika Saran said the villages would be adopted in phases. She expressed confidence that the scheme would thwart any attempt.by Naxals to again intrude the territory after a failed effort to set up an arms training camp at Murugamalai in 2007. The function also saw police receive petitions from tribals to assess their needs and being given cattle and sheep and some basic amenities like soaps and toothpaste. In a bid to bring about a sense of camaraderie, police had food and tea with the tribals_} assured them that their rights would be safeguarded.
