Section 1

Atle.npt any four questions from the following six questions    (20)

(a)    If a wedge shaped film is illuminated by a parallel beam of monochromatic light of wavelength X, find out the relation between wedge angle 9 and fringe w dth

0 of parallel fringes formed?

(b)    Explain important characteristics of a laser.

(c)    If refractive index of core of a fiber oplic cable is 1.5 and fractional index difference A is O.OOOS, find refractive index of cladding and numerical aperture.

(d)    Mosleys law helped for the correction of periodic table of elements. Explain the statement.

(a) Calculate power output of a nucleai reactor which consumes 5kg of U239 per day. Given that the average energy released per U* fission is 200 MaV.

(Avogadro number= 6.023 x 10 (Kg /mo!)

(f) A parallel beam of monochromatic light is incident on a plane transmission grating having 3000 lines 'cm. A third order diffraction Is observed at 30. Calculate the wavelength of line.

2.    (a) Prove that In Newton's ring experiment diameter of n*dark nr.g is proportional to Vn (8)

whal will be the ring number which will have double the diameter that of 401 dark ring

(b) What is fuli form of LASER? Explain the following terms related to laser with appropriate (7) figures.

i. Spontaneous emission ii. Stimulated emission iii. Stimulated absorption

3.    (a) Discuss how nuclear chain reaction is used In a constructive way in a nuclear reactor (8)

giving details of different pans of reactor with neat diagram.

(b) Explain with figures the fundamental differences between characteristic x ray spectrum (7) and continuous X ray spectrum. How do they originate?

4.    (a) White light is incident on a soap film = 1.33) at angle sin'1 (4/5) and    (8)

the refected tight on examination shows darV bands. Two consecutive

dark bands overlap corresponding to wavelengths 6100 A0 and 6000 A' calculate the

thickness of the film

(b) Explain functions of different parts of fiber optic communication system. Also write (7) advantages of communication through optical fibers.

5.    (a) Oerive Bragg's law. Calculate the smallest glancing angle at which K copper line    {8}

of 1.549 A will be reflected from crystal having atomic spacing of 4.255 A0.

(b) Explain construction and working of a G.M. counter.    (7)
