Q. 1. (a) (i) In addition to political subjects, 1 recurrent theme in Swift’s work is the attack on women. explain with special reference to Voyage two of Gulliver’s Travels.
Or

(ii) The person of Lemuel Gulliver has been created to serve as a mouthpiece for swift. Would you agree ? provide a reasoned ans.
(b) Identify, contextualize, discuss and critically comment &n the subsequent :
(i) The hapless nymph with wonder saw:
A whisker 1st and then a claw,
With many an ardent wish,
She stretched in vain to reach the prize.
What female heart can gold despise ?
What cat’s averse to fish ?
Or

(ii) But times are altered; trade’s unfeeling train
Usurp the land and disposses the swain;
Along the lawn, where scattered hamlets rose,
Unwieldy wealth, and cumbrous pomp repose;
And every want to opulence allied,
And every pang that folly pays to pride.

Perhaps the self-same song that obtained a path
Through the sad heart of Ruth, when, sick for home,
She stood in tears amid the alien corn;
The identical that oft-times hath
Charmed magic casements, opening on the foam
Of perilous seas in fairy lands forlorn.

Q. 2. (a) (i) ‘A Modest Proposal’ is a rational, pragmatic and workable solution to poverty, put forth by a theorist of economy. Would you agree ? explain.
Or

(ii) Why and how does Mary Wolstonecraft advocate the necessity of education for women ?
(b) (i) Write a brief but analytical essay on Romanticism.
Or

(ii) Write a note on the influence of science on the literature of mid-eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.
