I don’t know who she is
When she walks the street
Like the blind who ‘saw’ the elephant
I have seen her shattered to pieces
As head, tail, thigh and breasts
I have seen the scattered pieces yearn to be together
Seen them rush about
Anxious to be 1 once more
But before she could be whole
And raise her head proudly once more
I saw the wayside lingerie merchant
Make off with her waist.
I saw the fancy store merchant
Steal her face adorned with the nose ornament and the vermillion mark.
I saw the silk merchant
Slink up the stairs with her body
The arms and legs that did not know
Where to go…
The arms strove

In a vain and desperate attempt to rip off the breasts
Unable to do so
The legs faltered….
I don’t know who she is
But she has no secrets now.

-Savithri Rajeevan. (1*8=8 marks)

VII. Write a critical appreciation of the subsequent passage commenting on its theme and stylistic features:-

If you don’t believe it all, I’ll tell you a story, stated the Captain: 1 day Holmes and a friend were standing on the verandah of a shop. Almost like we are standing here now. But I suppose it was not raining then, At that time a fifty-year-old man passed by, carrying a bag and a few magazines. Holmes pointed at him and stated to his friend: Look, that fellow must have been to India, is probably a military pensioner, and a widower.

The friend, who wanted to check out on Holmes, hailed the man and spoke to him. Holmes was right. Asked how he managed it, Holmes said: He could only have come from a tropical country, for his face, his complexion, is quite dark. And the country could only be India, for if he had been to a few other place he would have got much darker. And by his physique, by Jesus! It’s certain that he had been a soldier. Considering his age, 1 can only conclude that he is a pensioner. And the bag he carries makes it clear that he is out shopping. If his spouse were alive, he wouldn’t have bothered about it at all. And he is now walking about with a sad expression on his face, thinking of his children and of his spouse who is no more.
(1*8=8 marks)

VIII. Write a critical appreciation of the subsequent poem commenting on its theme and stylistic features:-

How could my man
Become the tree
For Madhavi to twine upon,
Leaving me desolate
In my house of gods
Built upon fidelity?
I was foredoomed to grief,
Yet why didn’t the poet
Redress the wrong?
I lost my man, I knew
Lost too the wealth of my love and life.
I learnt my life’s lesson then:
Life’s truth is not in its wealth or its lack.

Two octaves in all minds.
Dark stains in all moonlight
When all love is self –love
How love others, save in vain.
(1*8=8 marks)

IX. Write a critical appreciation of the subsequent passage commenting on its theme and stylistic features:-

Aram Shah, with a gentle smile, extended his right hand toward Gowri. She gazed at the white stone glowing like the snow on his middle finger. The magical radiance of the 7 colours engulfed the 2 of them. Gowri offered him her left hand. The moment their hands joined together under a magnetic force the campus and the concrete structures that reared their heads here and there vanished. Space and time turned topsy-turvy.

At 1st Gowri thought that the darkness had washed over her eyes. Then it flew off to roost on top of the huge trees flanking the country road that gleamed in the pale moonlight. The 2 of them walked hand in hand, accompanied by a gentle breeze perfumed with the love of wild flowers, along the path where the moonlight and the shadows lay entwined in a deep embrace.
