MECH 201 T – MICROPROCESSORS AND THEIR INTERFACING TECHNIQUES

Time : 3 Hours Maximum : 75 Marks

Part A

ans any 6 ques..
every ques. carries two marks.

1. Explain the BSR mode of 8255.
2. Intel 8279 is a ‘two in one’ chip which may be utilized for interfacing keyboard and multiplexed display. What is the common feature of these interfaces which might have prompted Intel to put both functions inside identical chip?
3. Draw a typical block diagram for a microprocessor based industrial process control system to control temperature.
4. What is quantization?
5. Explain 20mA current loop.
6. What is LAN? provide an example for a commonly used LAN protocol.
7. Compare 8086 with 80386.
8. List the hardware requirements for a multi-user system.
9. Explain the basic method for frequency measurement using microprocessors.
(6 X two = 12 marks)

Part B

ans any 3 ques..
every ques. carries five marks.

10. Draw a circuit for interfacing an LCD display with 8086.
11. Draw a circuit for interfacing an ADC with 8086.
12. Explain the working of a modem highlighting the handshake signals.
13. Bring out the salient features of a Risc processor.
14. Draw a circuit for interfacing a stepper motor to 8086.
(3 X five = 15 marks)

Part C

ans all ques..
every ques. carries 12 marks.

15. (a) Interface an eight element DIP switch and eight single LEDs to 8086 through 8255. Write an assembly language program which displays the positions of the switches closed, on LEDs in real time.
Or
(b) Draw a block diagram of the internal architecture of 8253. discuss any 3 modes of operation of 8253.
16. (a) discuss a microprocessor based scale built around 8086 with the help of a hardware circuit. Write an assembly language program for the system.
Or
(b) discuss the most common standards used for serial data transfer.
17. (a) discuss the concepts of (i) virtual memory ; (ii) privilege level and ; (iii) PVAM.
Or
(b) Draw and discuss the architecture of 80386. discuss demand paging.
18. (a) Draw and discuss a hardware circuit for an 8086 based temperature control system. Write an assembly language program assuming ON-OFF control.
Or
(b) Draw and discuss a hardware circuit for controlling the firing angle of a thyristor used for controlling the input voltage of an electric motor. Write an assembly language program for the system using 8086 mnemonics.
(4 X 12 = 48 marks)
