THIRD SEMESTER B.E. (MECHANICAL ENGG.) DEGREE END SEMESTER EXAMINATIONS JULY 2008

SUBJECT: MATERIAL SCIENCE & METALLURGY (MEE-207)

(REVISED CREDIT SYSTEM)

29/07/08

Time: 3 Hours.

MAX.MARKS: 50

Instructions to Candidates

   Answer ANY FIVE full questions.

Missing data may be suitably assumed.

1A Melting temperatures of Metal A and Metal B are 1000 degree centigrade and 600 degree centigrade respectively. The metals A and B are mutually soluble in the liquid state and partly soluble in the solid state. A liquid phase alloy containing 70% B completely transforms into a mixture of two solid solutions at 400 degree centigrade. Maximum solubility of A in B and B in A are 15% and 10% respectively at 400 degree centigrade, 10% and 5% respectively at 100 degree centigrade. Assuming the curves to be linear, draw phase diagram to scale and label the regions. For 40% A alloy determine the following:

a) Weight percentage of eutectic formed

c) Temperature where equal proportions of liquid and solid phases exists.

1B Define solid solutions and briefly explain the rules governing the substitutional solid solutions.

(5+5=10 Marks)

2A Briefly explain BCC, FCC and HCP structures with neat sketches.

2B Explain the construction procedure & sketch neatly TTT diagram for 1080 steel and mark the phases.

(5+5=10 Marks)

3A What is Miller Indices? Show the following miller indices on simple cubical cells.

[111] (021) (101) [110]

3B Explain the steps in the construction of a binary phase diagram which shows complete solid

solubility and liquid insolubility. Name the system and sketch the diagram.    (5+5=10 Marks)

4A Neatly sketch Iron-Graphite equilibrium diagram and mark the phases.

4B Explain the following heat treatments with treatment cycle.

a)Normalising b) Annealing    (5+5=10 Marks)

5A With relevant sketches explain End quench test for hardenability.

5B Write short notes on:

a)Brass b)Tin Bronze    c)HSS    (5+5=10 Marks)

6A Write short notes on:

a)Flame hardening b)Nitriding

6B Show that the packing factor of FCC structure is 0.74.

6C Explain nucleation step of solidification.

(5+3+2=10 Marks)
