ENGLISH LANGUAGE Texts : Poetry, Julius Caesar, Power of Prose and Language Component

Time: 3 Hours    Max. Marks : 90

Instructions : 1) Read the instructions carefully.

2) Answer all the questions without omitting any Section.

SECTION - A

I. Annotate four of the following selecting two from poetry and two from

drama :    (4x5=20)

a)    But might I of Joves nectar sup I would not change for thine.

b)    Half sunk; a shattered Visage lies, whose frown And wrinkled lip and sneer of cold command Tell that its sculptor well those passions read

c)    Give every man thine ear, but few thy voice;

Take each mans Censure, but reserve thy judgement.

d)    Thy firmness makes my circle just And makes me end where I begun.

e)    Men at sometimes are masters of their fates;

The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars,

But in ourselves, that we are underlings.

f)    I had rather be a dog, and bay the moon,

Than such a Roman

g)    His life was gentle, and the elements

So mixed in him, that Nature might stand up And say to all the world, This was a man!

h)    O Constancy, be strong upon my side,

Set a huge mountain tween my heart and tongue !

SECTION - B

II. Answer two of the following in not more than a page each :    (2x7=14)

a)    How does the poet present his view that, Mortal beauties pass away but not those of art in Ode on a Grecian Urn ?

b)    Sketch the character of the Duke in the poem, My Last Duchess.

c)    Discuss the theme of the poem, London.

d)    Bring out the contrast between earthly love and spiritual love in the poem,

A valediction : forbidding mourning.

III.    Answer two of the following in not more than a page each :    (2x7=14)

a)    Sketch the character of Mark Antony.

b)    Write a note on the super natural elements in Julius Caesar.

c)    Compare and contrast Portia and Calpurnia.

d)    Comment on the role of the mob in Julius Caesar.

IV.    Answer two of the following in not more than a page each :    (2x7=14)

a)    What qualities of Mother Teresa does Kushwant Singh highlight in his essay ?

b)    How does Sir C.V. Raman describe the problem of soil erosion and illustrate the life giving properties of water ?

c)    Bring out the humour in the story, Witches loaves.

d)    What according to Dr. Radhakrishnan is the importance of studying various subjects ?

V. a) Write a brief essay on one of the following in not more than a page : (1x8=8)

i)    Price Rise - A perennial problem

ii)    Injustice to women in India

iii)    Pollution - The Ghastly Effects

b)    Write a precis of the following passage and suggest a suitable title :    8

One day When Prince Siddartha with a large retinue drove through the eastern gate of the city on the way to one of his parks, he met on the road, an old man, broken and decrepit. One could see his veins and muscles over the whole of his body; his teeth chattered, he was covered with wrinkles, he was bald and hardly able to utter hollow and unmelodious sounds. He was bent on his stick and all his limbs and joints trembled. Who is that man ? said the Prince to his Coachman, weak, his flesh and his blood are dried up, his muscles stick to his skin, his head is white, his teeth chatter, his body is wasted away. Leaning on his stick, he is hardly able to walk stumbling at every step. Is there something peculiar in his family, or is this the common of all created beings ?

Sir, replied the Coachman, that man is sinking owing to old age, suffering has destroyed his strength and he is despised by his relations. He is without support and people have abandoned his like a dead tree in a forest. But this is not anything peculiar to his family. In every creation youth is defeated by oldage. Your father, your mother, all your relations, all your friends, will come to the same state, this is the fate of all creatures.

c)    Read the following passage and answer the questions that follow : (1x4=4)

Bertrand Russell was a renowned mathematician, philosopher, man of letters and crusader for peace and individual liberty. Very few minds in our time showed such wide range of interests or enjoyed such universal esteem. Among

the many honours won by him was the Nobel prize for literature in 1950. His writings are noted for their incisiveness of thought, clarity of expression and grace of style. He said the pursuit of knowledge will spell disaster unless it is combined with Wisdom.

a)    Who was Bertrand Russell ?

b)    Which was the major honour won by him ?

c)    Comment on the qualities of his writing.

d)    What will happen of knowledge is combined with wisdom ?

d)    Rewrite the following in Indirect Speech :    1
