Duration : 3 hrs Maximum Marks: 75

Instruction:

  1. Question paper is divided into Group A, Group B, and Group C
  2. Each Group is of 25 marks
  3. Figure to the right in bracket indicate marks.
  4. Good Handwriting is expected.

Group A (25 Marks)

(5)

Answer any three questions (Question 1 is compulsory)

(10)

Q.1 Define Slenderness ratio, Stress, Bulk Modulus, Strut, Poissons ratio, Slope, Deflection, Column.

Q.2 (a) Differentiate between welded and riveted joints. Write advantages of Welded joints over riveted joints.

(10)

(b) Derive an expression to calculate the slope and deflection (at centre) of a simply supported beam of length l carrying a uniformly distributed load of w N/m over a whole span.

Q.3 (a) Describe Conjugate method. Write significance of Conjugate method.

(10)

(b) State and prove Macaulays method.

(10)

Q.4 Differentiate between strut and column. Derive an expression to calculate the buckling load of a column with

(a) One end fixed and other free,

(b) Both ends hinged.

Q.5 Write the assumptions made in Eulers theory. (10)

Group B (25 Marks)

(5)

Answer any three questions (Question 6 is compulsory)

(10)

Q.6 A T-section 15 cm X 12 cm X 2 cm is used as a strut of 4 m long with both ends hinged. Calculate the crippling load, if E = 2.0X106 kg/cm2.

(10)

Q.7 A beam AB simply supported at the ends is 4 m long. It carries a uniformly distributed load of intensity 20 KN/m over a length of 2 m starting at a distance of 1 m from left end support together with a concentrated load 40 KN at a distance of 3 m from the left end support. Calculate the deflection at the centre, if E = 210 G Pa and I = 9600 cm4.

(10)

Q.8 A horizontal girder of steel having uniform section is 14 m long and is simply supported at its ends. It carries concentrated loads of 120 KN and 80 KN at two points 3 m and 4.5 m from the two ends respectively. I for the section of the girder is 16 X 104 cm4 and E for steel 210 G Pa. Calculate the deflection of the girder at points under the two loads.

Q.9 (a) Calculate the centroid of L-section. (100 mm X 100 mm X 20 mm)

(b) Also calculate the MI of the above section.

A short hollow cast iron cylinder of wall thickness 10 mm is to carry a compressive load of 600 KN. Determine the outside diameter of the cylinder if the ultimate crushing stress for the material is 540 MN/m2. Use factor of safety of 6.

(10)

Q.10. A beam AB, 8.5 m long, rests on supports 5 m apart. The right hand end overhanging its support by 2 m left hand end by 1.5 m. The beam carries a uniformly distributed load 50 KN per metre run between the supports only. The beam also carries a point load of 60 KN at the extreme right hand end, and a point load of 40 KN at the left hand end. Construct the shear force and bending moment diagrams stating thereon all the important values of shear force and bending moment. State the position of point of inflexion on the beam.

Group C (25 Marks)
