(10)

Q.4With the help of a neat sketch explain the working of a simple
centrifugal pump along with necessry deductions.

(10)

Q.5 Deduce the formula for conduction through a hollow cylinder.

Group B (25 Marks)

Answer any three questions (Questions 6 is compulsory)

(5)

Q.6 Deduce the formula for calculating the pressure difference in a
simple U Tube manometer.

(10)

Q.7 A liquid is flowing through a horizontal straight commercial steel
pipe at 4.57m/s. The pipe used is commercial steel schedule
40.2 in nominal diameter. The viscosity of the liquid is 4.46
cp and the density 801kg/cu.m. Calculate the mechanical energy
friction loss Ff in J/Kg for a 36.6 m pipe.

Q.8 An electric wire having a diameter of 1.5mm and covered with a
plastic insulation (thickness = 2.5mm) is exposed to air at 300K
and h0 = 20W/m2K. The insulation has a k of 0.4W/mK. It is
assumed that the wire surface temperature is constant at 400K and
is not affected by the covering.

a)

(10)

Calculate the value of critical radius.

b)      Calculate the heat loss per m of wire length with no insulation.

c)      Repeat (b) for insulation present.

Q.9 A thick walled tube of stainless steel (A) having k = 21.63W/mK
with dimensions of 0.0254m ID and 0.0508m OD is covered with 0.0254m layer of asbestos

(10)

(B) insulation k = 0.2423W/mK. The inside wall temperature of the pipe is 811Kand the outside surface of insulation is at 310.8K. For a 0.305m length of pipe.
Calculate the heat loss and also the temperature at the interface
between the metal and the insulation.

(10)

Q.10. A free jet having a velocity of o 30.5m/s and a diameter of
1.0*10-2 m is deflected by a smooth fixed vane. However the
vane is in the form of a U so that the exit jet travels in the
direction just opposite to the entering jet. Calculate the force of
the jet on the vane.

Group C (25 Marks)

All Questions are Compulsory.
