Time : 3 hrs Maximum marks : 75

Instruction:

1. Question paper is divided into Group A, Group B and Group C

2. Each Group is 25 Marks

3. Figure to the right in bracket indicates marks.

4. Good Handwriting is expected

5. Assume suitable data if necessary.

Group A (25 Marks)

Answer any three questions (Question 1 is compulsory)

(5)

Q.1 Explain about conditions for fluidization?

(10)

Q.2 Write about Boundary layer?

Group B (25 Marks)

Answer any three questions (Questions 6 is compulsory)

(5)

Q.6 A horizontal cylindrical continuous decanter is to separate 1500 bbl/day

(0.993m3/h) of a liquid petroleum fraction from an equal volume of wash acid.

The oil is the continuous phase and at the operating temp has a viscosity of 1.1Cp

and a density of 54 lb/ft3 (1153 kg/m3). Compute a) size of the vessel b) height

of acid over flow above the vessel floor.

Q.7. Air at 20oC at 2-atm absolute pressure enters a finned tube steam heater through

a 50mm tube at an average velocity of 15m/s. It leaves the heater through a

65-mm tube at 90oC and 1.6atm absolute. What is the average air velocity at

the outlet?

(10)

Q.8 Water is flowing at 50 o F through a long horizontal plastic pipe 3in in inside

diameter, at a velocity of 8 ft/s. a) Calculate the pressure drop in lbf/in 2 per

100ft of pipe. b) If the pressure drop must be limited to 2lbf/in2 per 100ft of

pipe, what is the maximum allowable velocity of the water?

(10)

Q.9 Explain about friction loss from sudden expansion of pipe?

Q.10. Derive the hydrostatic equilibrium equation and barometric equation?

(10)

Group C (25 Marks)

All Questions are Compulsory.

v)                  The cross-section of minimum area at which the jet changes from a contraction to an expansion is called ______________.

a) contraction loss coefficient b) vena contract a c) Expansion loss coefficient

Q.11 True or false (each question carry 1 marks).

i)                    A steady flow through straight pipe is an example of one dimensional flow.

ii)                  Gases are generally considered to be incompressible.

iii)                Gauge pressure is pressure measured above the prevailing atmospheric pressure.
