Model Question Paper
BTCH4 CHEMICAL EQUIPMENT DESIGN
Time : 3 hrs Maximum marks : 75
Instruction: 1.
1. Question paper is divided into Group A, Group B and Group C
2. Each Group is 25 Marks
3. Figure to the right in bracket indicates marks.
4. Good Handwriting is expected
5. Assume suitable data if necessary.
Group A (25 Marks)
Answer any three questions (Question 1 is compulsory)
|
Q.1 Explain about Design Temperature.
-
(10)
(10)
Q.3 Estimate the thickness required for the components parts of the
vessel shown in
diagram. The vessel is operate at a temperature of 300o C. The material of
construction will be plane Carbon steel. Welds will be fully radiograph. A
corrosion allowance of 2 mm should be used. (10)
Q.4 Explain about different types of flanges.
(10)
Q.5 With neat sketch, explain the design of skirt support.

Group B (25 Marks)
Answer any three questions (Questions 6 is compulsory)
|
Q.6 With a neat diagram, Explain the design of lug support.
Q.7. Explain the design of flat cover head.
(10)
Q.8 Examine the possibility of making one 0.05 m diameter
under compensated
opening in the shell for data given below :
Outside diameter of shell = 2m
Max. Working pressure = 3.5 MN / m2
Wall thickness of shell = 0.05 m
Corrosion allowance = 3 X 10-3 m
Weld joint efficiency factor ( Class I ) = 1
Allowable stress ( IS : 2002 1962 2A ) = 96 MN / m2
Outside diameter of nozzle ( seamless ) = 0.25 m
Nozzle wall thickness = 0.016 m
Inside protrution of nozzle = not desired
Length of nozzle above surface = 0.1 m
(10)
Q.9 Drive the design equation for longitudinal bending
stresses due to dynamic loads.
Q.10. Derive the design equation for spherical pressure vessels.
(10)
Group C (25 Marks)
All Questions are Compulsory.
Q.11 Fill in the blanks ( each question carry 2 marks)
(i) Design calculations for the thickness, should be started from __________ of the vessel.
(ii) If the wall thickness is more than 30 mm ________________ may be neglected.
(iii) Minimum thickness of skirt wall in corroded condition should not be less
than ___________ as per IS : 2825 1969.
(iv) If thickness to diameter ratio is less than 0.1, the shell may be considered as _____________
(v) Class III vessels are not recommends for service at temperature below _____oC.
Q.11 Multiple choice question. (Each question carry 2 marks)
(i) Maximum permissible temperature for cart iron is ___________ .
(a) 540oC (b) 650oC (c) 200oC (d) 150oC
(ii) Indian standard code for unfired pressure vessel is _____________ .

(b) Flanged and standard dished head
(c) Flat head
(d) Hemispherical head Conical heads
Q.11 True or false (each question carry 1 marks).
i. Lug supports are subjected to minor wind loads.
ii. No radiography is necessary for class III vessels.
iii. For pressure vessels made of pure aluminium or soft aluminium alloys, the
maximum wall thickness is 3 mm.
iv. Wind load is a function of wind velocity, air density, shape of tower and the
arrangement of all such tall vessels.
v. Class II vessels are for minimum duty operations.
