THEORY OF JET PROPULSION
Model Question Paper
BTAE1 - THEORY OF JET PROPULSION
Time : 3 hrs Maximum marks : 75
Instruction:
1. Question paper is divided into Group A, Group B and Group C
2. Each Group is 25 Marks
3. Figure to the right in bracket indicates marks.
4. Good Handwriting is expected
5. Assume suitable data if necessary.
GROUP A (25 Marks)
(5)
Answer any three questions (Question 1
is compulsory)
Q.1 Explain the open cycle gas turbine
(10) (10)
Q.2 In a gas turbine plat the air is
compressed in a single stage compressor from 1 bar
to 9 bar and from an initial temperature of 300 k. The same air is then heated to
a temperature of 800 k and then expanded in the second turbine. Find the maximum
power that can be obtained from the installation if the mass of air circulated per
second is 2kg. Take cp=1kj/kg.k.
(10)
Q.3 Explain the pressure relief value
type oil system in the jet engines.
(10)
Q.4 Explain construction details of
turbine with sketch.
Q.5 Explain the combustion process of Jet engine with sketch.
GROUP B ( 25 Marks)
Answer any three questions (Question 6 is compulsory)
(5)
Q.6 What are assumptions of thermal
efficiency of an ideal gas turbine plant?
(10)
Q.7 Consider an ideal jet population
cycle in which air enters the compressor at
(10)
1 atm, 15˚c.
The pressure leaving the compressor is 5 atm and the maximum
temperature is 870˚c. The air expounds in the turbine to work just equal to the
compressor work on leaving the turbine the air expands reversibly and adiabatically
(10)
in a nozzle
to 1 atm. determine the velocity of the air leaving the nozzle.
(10)
Q.8 Explain the air starting system in
jet engine with sketch.
(10)
Q.9 Explain an AC ignition unit with
circuits.
Q.10 Explain the ground running danger zone with simple sketch.
Group C (25 Marks)
All Questions are Compulsory.
Q.11 Fill in the blanks ( each question carry 2 marks)

4) The nozzle guide vanes are
(a) Round shape (b) Irregular shape (c) Aerofoil shape (d) Airfoil shape
5) Turbine blades are made up of
(a) Cast iron (b) steel (c) Aluminum (d) none of these.
Q.11 Multiple choice question. (Each question carry 2 marks
1) The output of a gas turbine can be improved by expanding the hot air in two stages with ----------
2) For perfect cooling -------------
3) Calculated or the thrust is achieved using the -------- formula
4) At take off conditions the momentum drag of the airflow through the engine is---------------
5) The basic purpose of engine ground testing is to confirm ------------
Q.11 True or false (each question carry 1 marks).
1) Air fuel ratio is CV Of fuel/ CV of water
2) In open cycle gas turbine the mass of installation/kg is low.
3) The thrust of an engine is shown on a tacho meter.
4) An air stator motor transmits power through a reduction gear and clutch to the stator output shaft.
5) The oil tank is usually mounted on the engine and is normally a separate unit although it may also be an integral part OF GEARBOX. .
