Producers of goods and services engage celebrities as their brand ambassadors to
promote their products. These well-known personalities from the fields such as films,
TV, sports arts and culture work as models for increasing sales of these producers. They
are paid large sums for this modelling works.
A brand ambassador, once he or she signs a contract with a brand is supposed to
be loyal to the brand. He can’t afford to be caught using a rival product and show a
wrong brand association.
When Toyota Motors signed on movie star Amir Khan as its brand ambassador
for a huge amount of Rs. five crores, many people didn’t believe it to be a worth
investment. But the motor company was more than happy when Amir gladly used
Innova for his wedding reception in Bangalore and parties in Mumbai afterwards.
Amir is known to be attached to all the brands he endorses. Coke is a different case
in point. He specially asks for the ‘Thunda Brand’ every time he wants a soft drink.
a different such celebrity is Sachin Tendulkar. India’s star cricketer is very conscious
about the brand he endorses and is known to take Pepsi only as a soft drink at public
platforms. (As reported in the TOI of 4–1–2006).
