Time Allowed:Three Hours] [Maximum Marks:90

Note:- (1) All ques. are compulsory.

(2) Parts of a ques. should be attempted together and not separately.

(3) Write legibly and neatly.


SECTION-A

I. Attempt any 3 of the subsequent ques. in not more than

50 words every :

(a) Bring out central idea of Coleridge's poem 'Love'.

(b) What is the cause for Shelley's sadness in 'Summer and Winter'?

(c) What does Tennyson wish to ring in the new year?

(d) What will enable Masefield to respond to the call of the Wild Seas?

(e) What according to Dryden, makes Life a blessing? [Marks 3x5=15]

II. Trace the development of thought in Sarojini Naidu's poem, 'The Queen's
Rival.'
OR
Summarize Robert Browning's Prospice.[Marks 10]

III. Explain with reference to the context:-

I heard a thousand blended notes,
While in a grove I sate reclined.
In that sweet mood when pleasant thoughts
Bring sad thoughts to the mind.

OR

Remember, they have eyes like ours that wake
Or sleep and strength that can be won
By love. In every land is common life
That all can recognize and understand.[Marks 5]

IV. Describe in your own words Rosie's life at Raju's house with all its
conflicts and her success as a dancer.
OR
Draw a character sketch of Raju on the basis of your studying of R.K.
Narayan's novel 'The Guide'.[Marks 15]


SECTION-B


v. Use any 5 of the subsequent words in phrases of your own after

changing their forms as indicated in brackets:

Equal (Noun), Worth (adjective), Punishment (Verb), Grow (Noun),

Greedy (Adverb), Honest (Adverb), Exclusion (Verb), Sentiment

(Adjective).[Marks 10]

VI. Use any 5 of the subsequent idioms in your own sentences:

Come off, Pulled through, siting on the fence, the order of the day,
tooth and nail, in cold blood, every inch, harp on the identical string.[Marks 5]

VII. Translate the subsequent passage into Hindi/Punjabi or any other
Modern Indian Language :-

But to learn nothing but books of fiction is like eating nothing but biscuits
and sweetmeats.As we need plain, wholesome food for the body, so we must have serious
reading for the mind.And here we can select according to our taste.There are many noble
books on history, biography, philosophy, religion, travel and science which we ought to
read and which will provide us not only pleasure but an education.And we can develop a taste
for serious reading, so that in the end it will provide us more solid pleasure than even of
fiction and novels.


OR

(Only for those students whose mother-tongue in not MIL)

Paraphrase the subsequent :

Some murmur when their sky is clear

VIII. Write a letter to the Editor of a newsprint commenting on reckless
driving.
OR
Write a letter to the railway authorities, complaining that your furniture
has been damaged in transit, claiming damages.[Marks 10]

IX. Do as directed :-

(i) He stated "Will you listen to such a man ?"(change the narration)

(ii) If you search his pockets, you will obtain the watch.

(Change into compound sentence)

(iii) He leads a most unhappy life. (Change into Exclamatory)

(iV) The tree is too high for me to climb. (Remove "too")

(v) Bangalore is cooler than Madras.

(Change the degree of comparison)

(Vi) I offered him a chair. (Change the voice)

(vii) Everybody will admit that he did his best.(Change into negative)

(Viii) He did not live many years in India.

(Change into affirmative)

(iX) Is this the type of dress to wear to school?

(Change into Assertive)

(x) Their glory can never fade. (Change into interrogative)
